Premiere - Excellence: It's a Mindset with Michael Lawson

Michael Lawson is an extraordinary business leader, community advocate, legal mind and strategist.   


After earning a B.A. in political science and economics from Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, he began his career as a staff attorney for the U.S. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, in Washington, D.C.  In 1980, he returned to Los Angeles to join the prestigious law firm of  Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP  where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcy, and litigation.  He became a partner at the firm and thrived there for thirty-one years before retiring in 2011. In 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Michael to serve as U.S. Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. Based in Montreal, Canada, he served in this role from 2014 to 2017, coordinating and regulating international air travel. As if these achievements weren’t enough, in 2018, he was named president and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League.
